In this paper I am going to analyse the story of the religious conversion of the founders of two Pentecostal religious communities in a micro-region of mixed ethnicities and denominations in Eastern Moldavia. The analysis has a dual purpose. I explore the significance of religious conversion on the individual level This tendency in the research of religious ethnology tends to focus on the role that religious conversion had played in the life of the person in question: researchers try to depict how religious conversion came about in the life of the individual and the influence it had on their subsequent life-course. The accounts these individuals offer about their conversion also serve as a useful ethnographic base for exploring the way of thinking and the motivations of the individuals who founded such religious communities and played a part in their functioning. Since both of the men whose conversion I examine subsequently founded religious communities, by analysing their conversion and activities in the community I also hope to shed light on the emergence and current functioning of the communities in question. In terms of theory, I rely on Lewis R. Rambo and Charles E. Farhadian's model of the phases of religious conversion. Starting out from the observation of these authors that religious mediators play a part in the conversion of new members, I also wish to discuss how these leaders' own conceptualization of conversion influences the shaping of the group. Thus, in the present paper I also examine the role of religious conversion in the emergence of new religious communities. At the same time, the present analysis also serves as the basis of comparison for a forthcoming study in which I shall be analysing the conversion history of the members of this community.
