Abstract

The charitable diakonia of the Church is not just an accidental involvement, but belongs to its fundamental mission. This thesis can be supported in several ways. The author of this article finds the source of the obligation of Christians and the entire church community towards charitable service in God's nature. For Christians, God is Love (1 Jn 4, 8.16). Although some other names can be found (Yahweh, Elohim, Adonai), his main name that encompasses all others is Love. At the same time, God who is Love showed his merciful face (misericordiae vultus) in the history of salvation. He did it in a historical, visible and optimal way through his Son, Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God, who loved humanity so much that he sacrificed his life for us, was tortured and killed on the cross. This selfless love laid the foundation for the Church, which is essentially a community of love between human and God's beings. Those who do not love, although they are joined to the Church by baptism, technically speaking, do not belong to the Church since love is a real and not a formal sign of belonging to Christ's disciples (cf. Jn, 13, 35). Therefore, charitable work is a significant dimension of the church's mission, because it is precisely through effective love that the Church shows the merciful face of its Savior. The question that needs to be answered can be posed as follows: in what way does the image of God, which is love, imply the involvement of the individual and the Church in charitable work? The answer can be found in the Bible, in the writings of the Church Fathers and the documents of the Magisterium Ecclesiae, and especially in the teachings of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.
