A serious issue facing newly planted churches in many parts of the world is the question of how to perform culturally appropriate funerals, weddings, or other rites of passage. This is one part of a wider question about which aspects of indigenous cultures can be retained by Christians, which should be rejected, and which can be modified or adapted in some way. In this article, a Kyrgyz pastor (M.K.) and David Lewis discuss ways in which Kyrgyz Christians have addressed these issues. They also highlight some biblical precedents and principles that are likely to be applicable in many other parts of the world too.
