A historical novel about the mission of the brothers Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia. Based on historical facts, the author describes the arrival of both heralds to the pagan Slavs in order to invent the script for them and to instill in them in their own language the foundations of Greek education. They soon learn that they are to become a buffer in the power struggle between the Roman and Byzantine conceptions of Christianity. This leads to considerable compromises and a split between the two brothers. They go back to Greece, where the sick Cyril enters the monastery, soon dies and Methodius returns to Moravia to continue the struggle for Slavic education.
