This paper attempts to contribute towards an understanding of the present state of the Armenian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Armenia. Though the history of the Church will be touched on, as well as her relationship with the diaspora, the main matter is concerned with certain problems that the Church is under obligation to face within the republic itself. In consequence, the general social and political context cannot be ignored for they are intimately connected to them. How far the Church tries to come to terms with the question of renewal within herself, so as to fulfil what is meant to be her primary mission - the evangelisation of the people of Armenia - needs also to be attempted. Much of the information and commentary given comes from personal contacts with Armenian clergy and laity both in the republic and in the diaspora. The general impression, therefore, may often be one that is more anecdotal than academic.
