This essay is a brief examination of the place in Europe of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Istanbul. Through its ecumenical and international function, the Patriarchate has understood the need for a credible Christian witness within the European Union, an awareness which has increased in inter-Orthodox and ecumenical affairs. Although Europe represents a society which is in many ways "other" from an Orthodox point of view, it is the new arena of the Church's mission. In response to Europe's cultural and religious pluralism, the Orthodox churches can be vehicles of peace and reconciliation. They recall Europe's Christian roots, and the importance of a spiritual unity among peoples that can accompany and also bring to completion political and economic convergence.
