The participation of the laity in the mission of the Church. The mission of the Church makes present the mission of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All Christians are called to participate in this mission. Christian participation in the mission of the church is presented in this essay as participation in the threefold ministry of Christ. Christians participate in the prophetic ministry of Jesus Christ through the proclamation of the gospel in diverse circumstances, the missionary transmission of the apostolic tradition, and through Christian witness in the world. They share in the priestly ministry of Christ in public and private prayer, in their giving as a living sacrifice to God and for the realization of communion in the church as the body of Christ, and in their contribution to reconciliation. Christians share in the royal office of Christ in the victory over sin and temptation, in the advancement of fellowship and in Christian diakonia.
