Abstract

On a warm summer afternoon in 2013 I found myself witnessing the baptism of two children in a small village in Albania. As the priest prayed for them and submerged these ten-year-olds in great plastic buckets, they were surrounded by forty other excited young people and parents, all anxious to confess their faith in a living God. Shortly before the baptism, the priest who had taught these families to follow Christ told me privately that he had lived most of his life ‘knowing that God was dead’...
