Abstract

This review examines the field of religious history in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union. It highlights how the opening of archives in the early 1990s, along with new historiographical trends, has led to a renewed interest in religion's role in social, intellectual, and political transformations at the end of the imperial era and into the Soviet period. The article argues for the value of the 'lived religion' approach, which emphasizes the interconnections between religious authorities and community practices, and calls for a reconsideration of Orthodox experience in the narratives of modern European religious history.
